VW’s CEO takes responsibility for emissions test scandal and resigns

It was perhaps inevitable that Martin Winterkorn would be forced to resign as CEO of VW, not only because of the breach of trust and brand damage to VW, but with massive losses already inevitable and only likely to grow.  Despite this, VW still needs to get to the bottom of the internal cultural and behavioural patterns that must have allowed a number of its leaders to sanction the alleged emissions deceit.  And looking to the future, it’s even more important to understand and change the cultural factors that meant a much wider group – likely including senior leaders – didn’t ask probing questions about a situation that didn’t pass the “smell test”.
